NEW YORK CITY - April 11th, 12th & 13th

So its Sunday night and we are heading to Alex’s house in Astoria just outside of NY city… Brian and her are so nice enough to let us crash on their couches… Alex thank you for the map and the T-shirts it made our trip into NY city wonderful, your little tips helped out soooooo much and we were able to enjoy the city more…. Our first day we spent it mostly in downtown Manhattan, seeing the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island (soooo much history I didn’t know about)which both of my grandparents parents passed through from the Portugal/Azores Islands …. It almost brought tears to my eyes so see something that my ancestors had to go through for a better life here in the States…. WTC memorial was speechless and seeing the Fire Station Engine Co. 10 that was right across from the Trade Center’s….. chris and I took a moment and I think for him it was a sad moment of the loss of “his fire brothers” and then turned the corner to see the memorial set up representing every emergency personal on the wall and witnessed a NYFD firefighter on his knees taking a few minutes to pay his respects to one of his “Brothers” and just looking down at the ground and then looked up at where the towers should have been and it seemed like he was on another plant just wishing things were different…. It makes me thank god more for what Chris and every Firefighter, police officer, EMT and any other public servant how puts others first before their safety…. THANK YOU …………… so after that we stopped by an Irish Pub that was right around the corner from the Fire house and it was filled with patches from all over, mostly Fire but there were some Police…… oh we did so much on this day I cant remember it all …. we hit the financial district, took a picture with the bull, visited time square, Chrysler building, Grande Central Station (Gorgeous), Rockefeller Plaza, Empire State building(we went up to the 86th floor), mmmmm I think that’s about it……
Day two was the day chris planned, we tried to wake up early to make the Today show but going to bed at 3am just makes you want to sleep in even more… so we slept in and made our way to lunch reservations at the Boathouse in Central Park… Amazing food and atmosphere.... that’s when I realized I forgot my ring in the hotel, ooopppsss fire me now, we did the paddle boats and then went back to the hotel which was only like 3 blocks away to get my ring and finish the day with a carriage ride through the park. We ended the night with dinner at Planet Hollywood, which was our romantic dinner night in Disneyworld last year… so it fit the occasion…. Then he surprised me with tickets to my first Broadway show…. The phantom of the Opera… I loved it…… after the show we walked back to Time Square and enjoyed the night and watched the building lights change every 5 seconds

Oh how I love this city… on our last day in NYC we spent shopping and finishing up all of the touristy things… We tried to be on the Today show again but missed the last outdoor taping by 5 minutes. We stayed out on the streets for a couple of more segments when someone from the show came up to us and asked if we wanted to be on a with Kathy Lee and Hota in the 10:30 segment about taxes…. Chris and I looked at each other and said sure… Later to find out we were one of 9 groups to be asked a question and they ran out of time before they got to us… so needless to say we got to be apart of a live taping with Kathy lee but never made it to National TV : ( … the experience was fun and we will always have the memories…. From there we went to the Chelsea Market and had a sample of the best banana pudding every... We then jumped back on the subway to Chinatown to experience the Black market… It was an eye opening experience let me tell you… Our first experience was nuts… When you walked up the streets of Chinatown you hear guys quietly saying “purse, purse, coach, Louie, Rollex, etc”. and by the great advice from chirs’s cousin Nick, those are they ones that have all the knock off items for sale… I guess it was a bad time for selling since there were lots of cops around we found a black guy who then told us to follow him and meet him across the street… we followed and then he asked what we wanted and of course I wanted Coach… he said give him a second and he had to go check with one of his “brothers” …. We waited for about 5 minutes he came back and said things are hard right now and that we should go into the restaurant and order a soda and he would be back … we waited another 5-8 minutes and he was back but not with Coach … Apparently coach is harder to get on the black market and he only could get Louie right now… he gave me a folded up paper which had like 50 designs on it and told me to pick which one I liked… he then went back and got two purses from who know where because we were on the street and not in a store… he really wanted to make a sale but the purses weren’t what I wanted and we walked away… felt like a very bad drug deal . Chris and I tried it again before we headed back to our hotel to pick up our things and get on the road…. This time we went with the Chinese … Way better luck… we were in and out in less than 5 minutes… the guy did the whole talk thing and before I knew what I was getting myself into we were walking down a small walkway to a store deep in an ally way with other stores around it… the guy said some stuff in Chinese to a lady and she pointed up to the next store and as soon as we walked into her store she was opening up locked cabinets and pulling out purses right and left and shoving them into a black bag… all the while everyone else is looking out for cops and as for me Im trying to take my time with everything not thinking about how illegal it is … Finally I made my selection and the doors closed quickly and chris and I were on our way…. I have never shopped that fast in my life… I had to re look in the bag once we got on the subway just to see what purses I ended up with…. So in all if your ever in NYC and in Chinatown I highly recommend shopping at the black market stores just for the stories you can tell later on....

after a long 3 days it was time to get on the subway and make our exit out of the city to pick up Nancy... It was sad to leave but im for sure coming back soon.... its off to Washington DC from here....

six flags - Maryland & New Jersey

After a long day of History we had an interesting drive up to Six Flag America in Maryland…. Just say getting lost to the park and chris not wanting to take the turnpikes and me killing the Gps and only having the iphone for directions didn’t make for a fun two days..... by the next day we both forgot about the troubles we had the night before and enjoyed the park… I think we road Batwing 8 times ….. it was a great day

After a very long day at Six Flags we packed it all up again and traveled north to were I thought was New Jersey until Chris woke me up to tell me we were in Philadelphia … he said he looked up an Italian restaurant and it would only take 45 minutes….. Dinner was great and we decided to go site seeing and try to see the Liberty Bell (FYI its indoors and you cant see it when its 11:30 at night) so our 45minute detour turned into a 2 hour detour and add another hour getting lost, again, finding Six Flags Great Adventure….. so instead of getting into New Jersey at a decent time it was a 2 am night again…. Everything worked out and we spent the night in another Wal-Mart….. We made the best of it and woke up on a happy note of going to our final Six Flags of the trip # 4 total and 6 overall …. Who would of thought we would both like rollercoaster’s … I think over all Valenica has our vote on being number one but has some competition with Maryland and New Jersey’s Six Flags… Kingda ka was AMAZING !!!!!!!  hopefully soon I will be putting up the video chris took of it…. Words cant describe this coaster …. 0-126 in 3seconds…. 56 floors up and a straight down drop …once again AMAZING

Virginia - April 8th-9th

So sorry for you blog followers Wi-fi has been way harder to find then we thought.... so once again sorry for the absent days, we are trying to enjoy our trip here....

– Oh lets see, where to start…Sorry it’s been so long of a daily blog… Finding internet has been hard to do… we thought we would have time in Virginia but visiting with Joe and Karen was way more important… and our hotel in NY didn’t have free internet so I write to you in the bus on our drive to DC..

We had an amazing time in Virginia…. I can’t thank Joe and Karen enough for letting us spend the night at their house in Virginia Beach, with everything they had going on they made time for us and it was greatly appreciated ALOT… It was nice to have a hot shower, a bed and we even got to take a dip in the spa (which was well needed)…. The food was awesome and breakfast was yummy (nothing like having home cooked food when you haven’t had it in awhile, Texas for a matter of fact was our last home cooked food) … lots of great stories were pass along the breakfast table (ones that I haven’t heard before, so it was fun to hear)…. I was able to get a glimpse of what a great guy Joey was and how he was very loved by everyone and how he made an impact on chris’s life growing up … if it wasn’t for Joey putting the idea in Chris’s head about making a road trip in the bus, this trip would have never happened… After a long breakfast it was time to hit the road and travel to the first settlement in Williamsburg, VA, and wondered around Yorktown and tried to see Jamestown but the park closed before we could see it… Visiting Williamsburg made chris and I realize that our history of the US is very out dated and we need to have kids so we can relearn everything ….

2nd Week in Review

Day 14- Week in Review

Where to start……Everyday has been filled with fun and new experiences, and not a day has gone by where something amazing has happened. So we started the second week in Texas outside of Six Flags over Dallas. The park had a southern, New Mexico/Texas feel which we liked. We slept in a hotel parking lot between Dallas Stadium (gi-normous), Ranger Stadium and six flags. The park was nice and had a few good rides, and it was nice to take a day off to break up the Texas drive. We spent the night at my mom’s high school/nursing school life long friend’s house and wow, what a great call that was. Kinda didn’t know what to expect, since I hadn’t seen Tim and Louis since I was a child, but it was great to catch up and meet again. Louis stayed up til 11pm to meet and greet and make us feel at home, which we did, especially when we woke up to our first home cooked meal of the trip. Some delicious coffee cake, coffee and juice, strawberries and pineapple, and an egg & ham casserole that I’m sure others would have loved. 3 out of 4’s not bad for not knowing our finicky eating habits. Talked some more and hit the road. Saw an Armadillo sleeping on the side of the road….fact, we saw a whole bunch of animals sleeping on the road between Dallas and New Orleans.

I thought we were stopping in Baton Rouge for dinner, but when I woke up from what I thought was gonna be an hour nap, we were a half hour from New Orleans. We made it work. Snacked on some food and found a Church in Downtown, New Orleans doing the first mass of Easter. Of course in Placke tradition we were late. Mass started at 8 and by the time we found parking it was 845. Walked in and sat down in to the most beautiful church. We immediately stood up and the priest proceeded with the gospel. I kind a chuckled to myself remembering that mom always said that if you make it for the gospel, it counts. Stayed to the end then we took Nancy a block from Bourbon St and got a Margarita and Pizza. The streets were packed for a Saturday night and the buzz of the superbowl is everywhere. Decided to make up some time and found a Wal-mart (thanks for reminding us Louis) a couple hours out.
Woke up early and hit the road to Clearwater, FL. Drove through Pensacola, home of the Blue Angels. Made it to Amanda’s cousin’s hotel around 8 who just happed to be in town for spring training for the Phillies minor league team. All the other Phillies teams had left town, but his team’s first game started later than the rest allowing both of us to be able to say we spent Easter with family. We took Eric to a fabulous Italian restaurant played squeezed 18 holes of miniature golf in, finishing a half hour after closing, and went back to the hotel to watch the last few innings of opening season for baseball. Took off just before midnight and drove the 3 hours to Cape Canaveral for the shuttle launch.

In the excitement of getting there and still being able to find an excellent parking spot in the tiny community of Titusville, which was buzzing with activity for 3 in the morning, I locked the keys in the car for the second time since we picked up the bus. Waited an hour for the locksmith from AAA and passed the time by seeing who could get their penny closer to the handicap head…loser picks up. Sooner than later it was 6:20 am and we had a great uninterrupted view of the shuttle right on the water where a gator could strike at any time. The countdown began and the lake and sky lit up like we were crashing into the sun. Watching it clear the tower brought so many sensations throughout the body, I cannot even explain. It is something you can only experience first hand. About 20 seconds after take off a massive shockwave hits the shores and rumbles the ground like an earthquake. Our friend Keri who lives in Orlando some 70 miles inland said it woke her up.

We waited for the crowds to die down by napping til noon then headed to Cocoa Beach for some fun in the sun. Bought some cheap bogie boards, played some paddle ball, got a tan in April (actually got burnt) and swam in the warm ocean. Headed back to Keri’s for the first shower in 4 days and realized that 3 days should be max. Got to Keri’s picked up some Howie’s Pizza and caught up on life. The hospitality see has given us over the last two years has been so generous and we cannot thank her enough. Her son Noah is the coolest 5 year old I have ever met. And incredibly smart too.

Nancy was overdue for a tune up so I found a mechanic, at 5: 15 pm the Monday after Easter in Cocoa beach who said he could fit us into his schedule the next morning. In Sacramento I had to wait 3 days. So tue. morning we headed back to Cocoa Beach and met Mark, the VW mechanic. When we pulled in there were a variety of VWs spread about and a small little mechanics garage with a house attached and Mark wrenching away on one of his own VWs. We were a couple of hours later than we talked about, but from the phone Mark sounded laid back. And he was….a tall, skinny, long sandy blonde hair, in his mid 40’, who looked like he probably had a surf session that morning. We left Nancy in his hands and caught the trolley into town. Ate at McDonalds who had free Wi-Fi and while waiting for food, had a conversation with Wayne. Wayne was a 65+ retired dentist who lived in Cocoa Beach his whole life and started a conversation with me first about how to make the lines at McDonalds move faster then into politics. There was a crowd in the McDonalds and we covered a lot in 5 minutes. He just happened to take the seat next to Amanda and when I sat down with our food, we had an awesome 45 minute conversation about politics and government and the space program. It ends with Wayne “…..last bit of advice. Always brush your teeth after every meal. Even with no toothpaste. No one in my (his) family has cavities.” Spent the rest of the day shopping and went to pick up Nancy. Mark was finishing up when we got back and had done a through check of Nancy including the tire pressure. He asked if I was a “paper person and needed the work done written up.” After he wrote it all down and forgetting half the stuff he had previously told me he checked he came up with a number off the top of his head and said “ohh..I guess around 70 bucks.” Needless to say, I gave him a hundred considering Sacramento charged around 160. Had dinner that night with Keri (picked up Olive Garden) and headed off to Atlanta that night. Got in round 3 am, took a power nap and went to our second six flags.

Six Flags over Atlanta was packed. Apparently spring break is late out here, but that’s also the reason we were able to go mid week. We upgraded to Platinum Flash Passes and had no wait time to ride the rides and with the Platinum you get to ride ever ride twice and the second time in the front. Great way to ride all the rides in the park and get the coaster count up. We had a great day, but knew there were better parks to come. Found a great burger joint comparable to in n out after a day at six flags called steak and shake. Kinda a Johnny Rockets meets Sonic meets In n Out. Delicious. Spent the night closer to North Carolina and finished the drive the next morning.

Spent the next day at Hendrix Motor Sports, in North Carolina, home of NASCAR. The history and details of the sport were interesting and we say a pretty awesome showcase of cars. The highlight was defiantly seeing the workshops for Dale Jr. and Gordon and J. Johnson and M. Martin. Pretty impressive. And I think we made some family members in Cali jealous. Headed to Virginia that afternoon, but didn’t get there til sometime past 9 due to road/tunnel work and a later than expected start.
We got into Virginia and were greeted with a warm and loving reception from Joe and Karen who even had steak, potatoes, and salad, hot and ready for us. Even strawberry cake dessert. And we were starving at the time. It was so awesome to catch up and see and hear their life in Virginia. They were so kind and gracious to us; Joe even insisted we take a portable jump starter battery, which we are finding handy to charge electronics. And let me just say “thank you” to all our friends to let us stay at their place and steal their power. I think at maximum capacity, we need to charge 9 different pieces of electronics. The next morning we woke up and had another great meal prepared for us. Scrambled eggs, fruit, biscuits and jam, milk and cereal. Couldn't ask for more. Took some pictures and heard some stories with Gunther and said our good-bye’s. Even got some great advice to check out Jamestown and the first settlements of America which we had not planned into our trip. Spent the afternoon seeing the beauty and history of Yorktown, Williamsburg, and Jamestown. The buildings there were amazing. Wish we had more time to see all the exhibits. But it was off for two days at six flags.

Nancy’s running strong after the tune up. The turn signal completely froze for a while. Now it’s just hard to operate and takes some force. We are finding the Hazards work just as well. The front speaker went out this week. Now only the speaker in the back of the bus works. We do have a battery powered I-pod speaker dock which can get the job done for the front, or the favored option is the Bluetooth headset so the person in the back can listen to karaoke or American Idol tryouts while they blog. We are also playing the license plate game when we are both in the front seats and so far it is really close. We have had a few moments of silence after poor navigating and/or poor decision making, but are learning to laugh off the mistakes. We are looking forward to spending the next week in the NY/DC areas and having a minimal week of driving.

The Bus compliments are rolling in and we are getting LOTS of figure pointing, picture taking and story telling. Ever since cape canaveral it hasn’t stopped…
